How to Edit the Tone Curve of a .cube LUT

Adjust the tone and RGB response of a 3D LUT, preview the result, and export a revised .cube file or a tunable DCTL for DaVinci Resolve.

When the LUT—not the grade—needs adjustment

A creative LUT may be almost right but need a softer highlight roll-off, a lifted shadow region, or a small channel correction. Editing the LUT directly creates a portable result without rebuilding a grading project.

This workflow is appropriate when the desired change belongs in the reusable transform itself. Shot-specific corrections, secondary keys, tracking, and scene balancing still belong in the grading application.

Understand the starting LUT

Identify whether the LUT is a technical transform, display transform, or creative look, and document its expected input and output color spaces. That context determines whether a curve adjustment is correcting the transform or changing its intended purpose.

Step-by-step workflow

1. Open the .cube LUT in LUT Tuner

Confirm that the LUT loads without structural errors. Preserve the original file, then name the working version according to the show, transform, or revision it represents.

2. Choose diagnostic preview material

Start with generated ramps or neutral patterns to reveal clipping, discontinuities, and channel imbalance. Then open representative still images or supported video media to judge faces, production design, saturated colors, shadows, and highlights.

3. Inspect ganged and channel curves

Review the combined RGB response before isolating individual red, green, and blue channels. In LUT Tuner, use the picker to connect visible image behavior to points in the LUT response rather than adjusting curves blindly.

4. Make restrained curve edits

Move one region at a time and use Radius Points to influence neighboring samples smoothly. Use Gang mode for neutral tone-shape changes and individual channel modes only when the desired correction is intentionally chromatic.

5. Compare processing states

Switch between the edited result, Original LUT, and Bypass in LUT Tuner. Pause video and step frame by frame when a particular shot exposes a problem. Return to neutral patterns after creative-media review to ensure the change did not introduce a technical artifact.

6. Evaluate interpolation and LUT size

Preview with tetrahedral interpolation by default and compare trilinear behavior when the destination system uses it. Keep the current sampled size unless compatibility, performance, or delivery specifications require a resize.

7. Choose a .cube file, a DCTL, or both

Use .cube for broad compatibility, DCTL for a Resolve-specific delivery, or both when the transform must serve multiple destinations.

8. Fit and configure the DCTL

Use LUT Tuner to create a tunable approximation of the edited LUT, then preview the fit against the working result. It is not a mathematically exact conversion or the original LUT embedded inside a DCTL. Review the mean, p95, and maximum RMSE values: they summarize the average error, the error across most samples, and the largest outlier. The numbers are diagnostic aids, so also inspect ramps and representative images before deciding that the fit is suitable.

9. Load the DCTL through Resolve’s DCTL OFX node

On the Color page, add the DCTL OFX effect to a node, then choose the exported DCTL within the effect’s controls. This loading method exposes the tunable parameters in Resolve. Simply dragging and dropping the DCTL file onto a regular node may apply the transform, but it will not expose the controls.

Confirm the expected color-space context and range handling, compare the DCTL with the revised LUT at its neutral settings, exercise the controls, and inspect shadows, highlights, saturated colors, and skin tones for unexpected behavior.

Why create a tunable DCTL?

A .cube LUT is a fixed sampled transform. If its strength, contrast, or color response needs to change, the usual options are to mix it with the unprocessed image or generate another LUT. A DCTL can carry the look into DaVinci Resolve with useful parameters exposed directly in the node, making one transform adaptable across shots and versions.

  • Tune the look in context: adjust tone strength, color strength, exposure, input contrast, and contrast pivot without returning to LUT Tuner for every small variation.
  • Control the application: use Global Blend to reduce the overall effect, or Invert when the fitted transform and workflow support that operation.
  • Handle image range deliberately: extended-range handling can preserve values beyond the conventional bounded LUT range when the transform is configured for it.
  • Reduce variant clutter: one tunable DCTL can cover adjustments that might otherwise require several separately named LUT exports.

A practical DCTL handoff

Supply the DCTL with the revised .cube, a note identifying the expected color-space context, a representative reference image, and the intended default settings and adjustment limits. This gives the colorist a documented baseline plus a portable fallback.
